The Black Archives back in Amsterdam East
After a memorable period in Amsterdam Zuidoost, The Black Archives returns to its renovated location on the Zeeburgerdijk in Amsterdam-Oost. The building of vereniging Ons Suriname has been refurbished, and The Black Archives is now housed in the same building as the Suriname Museum.
What does this mean for visitors?
As we are part of the museum building, you cannot simply walk in. There are two ways to visit:
1. Visit our exhibition Purchase a ticket for the exhibition Echoes of In*dependence. Your ticket also grants access to the Suriname Museum — three floors of art, history, culture and heritage. Order your ticket here!
2. Visit our archive Want to explore the archive without visiting the exhibition? Check in at the Suriname Museum's front desk. You will be given a special keycord and guided to The Black Archives, where you can browse the archive at your own pace. View the collections here.
About our archive
In our archive space you will find our special collections and our community archive: a curated selection of books that we believe should be accessible to everyone. Around 400 books, organised by category, displayed on shelves for you to browse and pick up freely. You can preview them in advance on LibraryThing.
We also have a climate-controlled cabinet housing the special archival collection of Otto and Hermina Huiswoud, containing items such as old newspaper articles, magazines, photographs, posters and more. This collection is not openly accessible, as it consists of fragile and valuable materials. To view it, please make an appointment in advance by emailing [email protected]. You can search the Huiswoud collection on archieven.nl and note which items you would like to consult.

About the move
The Black Archives was founded in 2016 in the building of vereniging Ons Suriname on the Zeeburgerdijk in Amsterdam-Oost.
In March 2024, The Black Archives temporarily relocated to Bijlmerplein 140 in Amsterdam Zuidoost, due to the renovation of the vereniging Ons Suriname (VOS) building on the Zeeburgerdijk. This renovation was long overdue: after decades of vibrant activity, the 'Hugo Olijfveld Huis' needed to be restored to safely house and display our collections. The renovation is now complete. The refurbished building offers better climate conditions for our special collection, as well as space for events and temporary exhibitions.
