Na een memorabele periode in Zuidoost keert The Black Archives in februari 2026 terug naar de gerenoveerde locatie aan de Zeeburgerdijk in Oost. Het pand van vereniging Ons Suriname is opgeknapt. Op 25 november opent het Suriname Museum officieel en in februari opent de gerenoveerde locatie van The Black Archives

The Black Archives ontstond in 2016 in het pand van vereniging Ons Suriname op de Zeeburgerdijk in Amsterdam-Oost. Check onze origin story. The Black Archives verhuisde in maart 2024 tijdelijk naar Bijlmerplein 140 in Amsterdam-Zuidoost vanwege de renovatie van het pand van vereniging Ons Suriname (VOS) aan de Zeeburgerdijk. Deze renovatie was hard nodig: na decennia aan mooie activiteiten moest het 'Hugo Olijfveld Huis' worden opgeknapt om onze collecties veilig te kunnen bewaren en tentoon te stellen.
De renovatie is nu afgerond. Het gerenoveerde pand biedt een beter klimaat voor onze bijzondere collectie, het biedt ruimte voor evenementen en voor tijdelijke exposities.
Twee locaties, één missie
In de eerste maanden van 2026 zal The Black Archives tijdelijk twee locaties beheren, je kan dan op twee locaties terecht om onze collecties en exposities te bezoeken:
In Zuidoost blijven we bouwen aan een plek die toegankelijk is voor de community: een plek voor storytelling, community building en het ophalen van verhalen uit de buurt. Ook na maart blijven we daarom programmeren op verschillende locaties in Zuidoost. We nodigen je uit om bij te dragen met verhalen, boeken, documenten en andere archiefstukken!

Wat betekent dit voor bezoekers?
- Vanaf begin februari 2025: Opening nieuwe expositie in Oost met (in eerste instantie) de Huiswoud collectie
- Locatie Zuidoost (Bijlmerplein 140): Blijft open als tweede locatie tot eind maart
- Locatie Oost (Zeeburgerdijk 21): Wordt de vaste bezoekerslocatie vanaf februari 2026
- Programmering: 1x per maand events in Oost, 1x per maand events in Zuidoost
- 20 februari: Anton de Komdag
- 6 maart: Ghana Independence Day

- Oost (Zeeburgerdijk): Expositieruimte en archief in het gerenoveerde pand van vereniging Ons Suriname. Hier vind je de Huiswoud en Heilbron collectie, de bijzondere archiefcollectie van The Black Archives en we openen de expositie Echoes of In*dependence over de dekolonisatiegeschiedenis van Suriname, Congo, Cabo Verde en Ghana.
- Zuidoost (Bijlmerplein): Community archief en bezoekerslocatie met focus op orale geschiedenis en cultureel erfgoed van Surinaamse, Caribische en Afrikaanse diasporagemeenschappen en de boekencollectie van The Black Archives. In aanloop naar de opening van ons nieuwe pand kan je de pop-up expositie ‘Road to Echoes of In*dependence’ bezoeken met bijzondere kunstwerken van o.a. Marcel Nonda en Les Adu.
In Zuidoost blijven we bouwen aan een plek die toegankelijk is voor de community: een plek voor storytelling, community building en het ophalen van verhalen uit de buurt. Ook na maart blijven we daarom programmeren op verschillende locaties in Zuidoost. We nodigen je uit om bij te dragen met verhalen, boeken, documenten en andere archiefstukken!

The building of the association Ons Suriname has been refurbished. On November 25, the Suriname Museum officially opens, and in February, the renovated location of The Black Archives opens.

The Black Archives was founded in 2016 in the building of the association Ons Suriname on Zeeburgerdijk in Amsterdam-East. Check our origin story. The Black Archives temporarily moved to Bijlmerplein 140 in Amsterdam-Southeast in March 2024 due to the renovation of the Ons Suriname association (VOS) building on Zeeburgerdijk. This renovation was desperately needed: after decades of wonderful activities, the 'Hugo Olijfveld House' needed to be refurbished to safely preserve and display our collections.
The renovation is now complete. The renovated building offers a better climate for our special collection, provides space for events and temporary exhibitions.
Two locations, one mission
In the first months of 2026, The Black Archives will temporarily manage two locations, where you can visit our collections and exhibitions at two sites:
In Southeast, we continue to build a place that is accessible to the community: a place for storytelling, community building, and collecting stories from the neighborhood. Even after March, we will therefore continue programming at various locations in Southeast. We invite you to contribute with stories, books, documents, and other archival materials!

- Southeast location (Bijlmerplein 140): Remains open as a second location until the end of March
- East location (Zeeburgerdijk 21): Becomes the permanent visitor location from February 2026
- Programming: Events in East once a month, events in Southeast once a month

Here you'll find the Huiswoud and Heilbron collection, The Black Archives' special archive collection, and we're opening the exhibition Echoes of In*dependence about the decolonization history of Suriname, Congo, Cabo Verde, and Ghana.
- Southeast (Bijlmerplein): Community archive and visitor location with a focus on oral history and cultural heritage of Surinamese, Caribbean, and African diaspora communities and The Black Archives' book collection. In the lead-up to the opening of our new building, you can visit the pop-up exhibition 'Road to Echoes of In*dependence' featuring special artworks by Marcel Nonda, Les Adu, and others.
