Authshumao, also known as Herrie/Harry, was an indigenous leader. He lived in the area we now know as Cape Town, South Africa. He received training in Java under the English and learned more about navigation. Afterwards, he established a trading post on Robben Island with other Khoi people.
In 1652, the Dutch arrived under the leadership of Jan van Riebeeck. They forced the Khoi people to leave the area to make way for a VOC (Dutch East India Company) fort. Autshumao resisted the Dutch alongside the Khoi. Eventually, the Dutch expelled Autshumao and the Khoi from the surrounding area of Cape Town. |
