Wij zijn per 6 maart 2024 verhuisd naar Bijlmerplein 140, Amsterdam. Bezoek ons van woensdag-zaterdag tussen 11.00u-17.00u voor een indruk van ons archief. Voor tours, mail naar [email protected].
The Black Archives (TBA) gaat verhuizen! Maar wij komen wel terug. We verkassen in het voorjaar van 2024 tijdelijk naar de Amsterdamse Poort (Bijlmer) in verband met een verbouwing van het pand van vereniging Ons Suriname (VOS). De vereniging wilt in 2024-205 het Suriname Museum openen. Lees meer over het Suriname Museum. The Black Archives krijgt ook ruimte in het gerenoveerde pand. Sinds de oprichting heeft TBA een aardige impact weten te maken met haar exposities, archief, events en activisme, hier zijn we erg trots op. Om ons werk op een duurzame manier voort te kunnen zetten is een renovatie van het pand erg nodig.
Waarom gaat TBA verhuizen?
TBA is in 2016 geboren toen studentencollectief New Urban Collective met de gebroeders Heilbron intrek nam in het pand van VOS, het 'Hugo Olijfveld Huis'. Het pand is eigendom van vereniging Ons Suriname, de oudste vereniging van Surinamers in Nederland waar wij een zeer bijzondere collectie vonden. Na decennia aan mooie activiteiten is het toe aan een opknapbeurt, dit zal de komende jaren in fases worden uitgevoerd. In 2019 is de eerste verdieping al opgeknapt, in 2021-2022 is een deel van de begane grond opgeknapt en in 2023 wordt de tweede etage van het pand - waar The Black Archives is gevestigd - aangepakt. Zo zullen de ramen en het dak beter worden geïsoleerd, en de ruimtes zullen worden ingericht zodat ze beter geschikt zijn voor het huisvesten en veilig conserveren van onze bijzondere collecties en exposities.
Op langere termijn willen we een grondige renovatie van het pand realiseren door o.a. een lift in het pand te laten bouwen zodat het pand beter toegankelijk wordt. Hier zijn echter extra middelen voor nodig.
Wat betekent deze verhuizing voor TBA?
TBA heeft meer dan 10.000 bijzondere boeken en documenten die met zorg behandeld moeten worden. We hebben een relatief klein team en werken met vrijwilligers om de collecties te inventariseren. In mei - juni 2023 vindt er eerst een 'interne verhuizing' plaats. Het originele archief zal tijdelijk van de bovenste verdieping (Zeeburgerdijk 19b) naar de begane grond (Zeeburgerdijk 21) worden verplaatst waar de expositie Facing Blackness te zien was. De nieuwe locatie in de Bijlmer wordt in het voorjaar van 2024 geopend, de exacte openingsdatum wordt nog bekendgemaakt, blijf op de hoogte via onze socials en nieuwsbrief.

In de Bijlmer willen we een community archief bouwen waarin we niet alleen verzwegen geschiedenis en Black culture delen maar ook willen ophalen en in contact met de community willen staan! We hebben nu een grote collectie over de Surinaamse gemeenschap en geschiedenis, maar dit willen we uitbreiden met verhalen, boeken, documenten en andere archiefstukken uit Caribische en Afrikaanse gemeenschappen. We nodigen je uit om bij te dragen! Op de nieuwe tijdelijke locatie fuseren we met onze lokale dependance The Black Archives Bijlmer (TBAB). Sinds 2020 bouwen wij aan deze dependance in de Bijlmer: TBAB richt zich in de eerste plaats op archivering en storytelling door middel van community building. Het doel is om een hoofdbestanddeel van de Afro/zwarte ervaringen in Amsterdam te worden en de gelaagde en unieke geschiedenis van de wijk Zuidoost te benadrukken. Op de nieuwe tijdelijke locatie zullen we prioriteit geven aan orale geschiedenis en cultureel erfgoed van de Surinaamse, Caribische en Afrikaanse diasporagemeenschappen.

The Black Archives is moving! But we will be back. Early 2024, we are temporarily relocating to the Amsterdamse Poort (Bijlmer) due to the renovation of the building belonging to the ‘Our Suriname Association’. Since its establishment, TBA has managed to have a significant impact with its exhibitions, archive, events, and activism, and we are very proud of this. To continue our work in a sustainable manner, renovation of the building is greatly needed.
Why is TBA moving?
TBA was born in 2016 when the student collective New Urban Collective moved into the building of VOS, the 'Hugo Olijfveld Huis.' The building is owned by the ‘Our Suriname Association’, the oldest association of Surinamese people in the Netherlands, where we found a very special collection. After decades of wonderful activities, the building is in need of refurbishment, which will be carried out in phases over the coming years. The first floor was renovated in 2019, a portion of the ground floor was renovated in 2021-2022, and in 2023, the second floor of the building—where The Black Archives is located—will be tackled. The windows and roof will be better insulated, and the spaces will be designed to better accommodate and safely preserve our unique collections and exhibitions. Learn more about the Suriname Museum. In the long term, we aim to realize a thorough renovation of the building, including the installation of an elevator to improve accessibility. However, additional resources are needed for this purpose.
What does this move mean for TBA?
TBA has over 10,000 unique books and documents that need to be handled with care. We have a relatively small team and work with volunteers to inventory the collections. In May-June 2023, an "internal move" will take place first a part of the original archive will be temporarily relocated from the top floor (Zeeburgerdijk 19b) to the ground floor (Zeeburgerdijk 21), where the Facing Blackness exhibition was held. We currently have a significant collection focusing on Surinamese communities and histories. In addition, we're expanding the collection to include more experiences, stories, books, documents, and other archival materials from other Afro/Black communities like Caribbean and African communities. We invite you to join us in our efforts. The Black Archives will fuse with its local branch. We've been building our branch in the Bijlmer since 2020: The Black Archives Bijlmer (TBAB). This branch focuses, first and foremost, on archiving and storytelling through community building. The aim is to become a staple of Afro/Black experiences in Amsterdam and highlight the layered and unique history of the Southeast borough. At the new temporary location, we will prioritize oral histories and cultures.
