25 maart 2024: Memory as a call, Imagination as a Response: Mic Checkin' The Archive.
A workshop about the visual, sonic and linguistic reclaimings of the remembered.
"While some debate what history is or was, others take it into their own hands." -
Michel-Rolph Trouillot
Filmmaker and cultural historian Adrian Van Wyk invites 20 participants to explore the reimagined landscapes of historical archives. Together, we'll uncover how these collections intricately shape narratives, delving into their profound implications and significance. Collectively the workshop will understand how we can illuminate obscured narratives, unveil silenced stories, and forge connections between images and the chronicles they embody.
Inspired by the words of Haitian Historian Michel-Rolph Trouillot, who challenged Eurocentric notions of historical writing. This workshop will delve deeper into the rich potential inherent in the diverse array of historical archives, serving as a vital foundation for reexamining, remixing and reshaping distorted narratives.
In the wake of Trouillot's inquiry, this discussion seeks to uncover new avenues emerging from the embrace of diverse definitions of what the historical archive is. This dialogue aims to unearth strategies that breathe life into forgotten histories, engaging audiences previously untouched by conventional narratives.
Through collaborative discourse, the workshop aims to peel back the layers of multiple archives, each offering a portal to untold narratives awaiting discovery. By spotlighting innovative approaches, participants will explore ways to align historical reflections with contemporary contexts, igniting the imaginations of new audiences and bridging the gap between past and present.
At the core of this workshop lies the archive as a catalyst for storytelling—a platform where participants can connect and explore. Through shared insights and creative exploration, this workshop will unveil the transformative power of remixing history, infusing narratives with renewed vitality through modern forms of expression.
