Bekladding van pand vereniging Ons Suriname en The Black Archives is poging tot racistische intimidatie

In de ochtend van donderdag 3 december is de muurschildering ‘De muur van Surinaamse en zwarte helden’ door nog onbekende personen beklad en gevandaliseerd met witte verf stickers waarop de tekst ‘Roetveeg Piet = Genocide”. Het pand is eigendom van vereniging Ons Suriname, in het pand zijn o.a. The Black Archives (TBA), 529 media (organisatoren van Keti Koti festival en Kwakoe festival), de Kids van Oost en Eritrese Vereniging Amsterdam en Omgeving gevestigd. The Black Archives en vereniging Ons Suriname zien dit als een poging tot racistische intimidatie van zwarte mensen die zich uitspreken tegen racisme.
Racistische intimidatie
Vereniging Ons Suriname (VOS) is een van de oudste verenigingen van Surinamers in Nederland en bestaat sinds 1919. Het heeft zich decennia lang ingezet voor een gelijkwaardige samenleving en tegen racisme. The Black Archives beoogt d.m.v. kunst, debat, educatie en erfgoed een bijdrage te leveren aan een meer gelijkwaardige samenleving en stad. Verschillende leden van de organisaties nemen actief deel aan het maatschappelijke debat over (anti-zwart) racisme en discriminatie. Vorig jaar waren Jessica de Abreu en Mitchell Esajas en anderen slachtoffer van racistische intimidatie en extreem-rechts geweld tijdens de aanslag op een vergadering van Kick Out Zwarte Piet in Den Haag. Hierbij werd Esajas’ auto vernield.
TBA en VOS vragen politie en autoriteiten ook om uit te zoeken of de muur door dezelfde extreemrechtse actiegroep is beklad die enkele weken geleden in blackface (verkleed als zwarte piet) voor de deur van rapper Akwasi en zijn gezin stonden. Zij lieten dezelfde stickers in zijn brievenbus achter. De afgelopen weken werden vreedzame demonstranten van o.a. Kick Out Zwarte Piet belaagd door extreem rechtse lieden en hooligans. Eerder werd een muurschildering over slachtoffers van politiegeweld in Amsterdam Noord beklad. Ironisch genoeg was Esajas bij een commissievergadering in de Tweede Kamer om in gesprek te gaan over landelijk beleid tegen discriminatie en racisme toen hij kennis nam van de bekladding. Esajas zegt:
“Wij maken ons zorgen over de radicalisering en het toenemende geweld van extreem-rechts richting mensen die zich op een vreedzame manier uitspreken tegen racisme en voor een gelijkwaardigheid. The Black Archives en vereniging Ons Suriname zijn al decennialang een veilige plek voor de Surinaamse en zwarte gemeenschap in Amsterdam. Wij roepen de gemeente Amsterdam en de premier op om het probleem van institutioneel en anti-zwart racisme te bestrijden en de veiligheid van mensen die van hun democratische recht gebruik maken om racisme te bestrijden te waarborgen.”
Erfgoed en kunst kan zorgen voor verbinding
De muurschildering ‘De muur van Surinaamse en zwarte helden’ is in de zomer van 2020 na de #BlackLivesMatter protesten georganiseerd en gemaakt door kunstenaars Hedy Tjin en Dewi ‘Butterfingaz’ Elsinga. Op de muur zijn Surinaamse en zwarte helden Anton de Kom, Perez Jong Loy, Cindy Kerseborn, Dr. Sophie Redmond en Hugo Kooks afgebeeld. Het is een extensie van de expositie ‘Surinamers in Nederland: 100 jaar Emancipatie en Strijd’. De expositie zou tot 5 december te zien zijn maar wordt op verzoek van velen, en vanwege de eerdere Corona-lockdown verlengd tot 22 februari, de geboortedag van Anton de Kom. The Black Archives wil de muurschildering laten herstellen door de kunstenaars, mensen kunnen doneren via de website om dit mogelijk te maken.

Vandalizing the building of Vereniging Ons Suriname and The Black Archives is an attempt to racist intimidation
In the morning of Thursday, December 3, the mural ‘The Wall of Surinamese and Black Heroes’ was besmirched and vandalized with stickers stating ‘Roetveeg Piet = Genocide’ by unknown perpetrators. The building is owned by Vereniging Ons Suriname and home to The Black Archives, 529 Media (organizers of the Keti Koti and Kwaku and other festivals), the Kids van Oost, and the Eritrese Vereniging Amsterdam en Omgeving. The Black Archives and Vereniging Ons Suriname view this as an attempt to racist intimidation of Black people who speak up and against racism.

Vereniging Ons Suriname (VOS) is one of the oldest associations of Surinamese people in the Netherlands and dates back to 1919. For decades the association dedicated itself to an equal society and against racism. The Black Archives (TBA) aims to contribute to a more equal society and city through art, debate, education, and heritage. Several members of these organizations actively participate in public debates about racism and discrimination. Last year, Jessica de Abreu, Mitchell Esajas, and others were victims of racist intimidation and an extreme-right violent attack that took place during a Kick Out Zwarte Piet meeting in Den Haag (The Hague). During this attack, Esajas’s car was destroyed.
TBA and VOS are asking police and authorities to find out if the wall was vandalized by the same extreme-right group who are responsible for visiting the house of rapper Awkwasi and his family. They were dressed as Zwarte Piet (Black Pete), which means they were in blackface. They left the same stickers in the mailbox. Peaceful demonstrators, like those of Kick Out Zwarte Piet, have been harassed by extreme-right affiliates and hooligans in recent weeks. Ironically, Esajas was attending a committee meeting in the Tweede Kamer (House of Representatives) to discuss national policy against discrimination and racism when he found out about the vandalization. Esajas states:
“We are worried about the radicalization and the increase of violence from the extreme-right towards people who peacefully speak up against racism and for equality. The Black Archives and Vereniging Ons Suriname have, for decades, been a safe space for the Surinamese and Black community in Amsterdam. We call for the City of Amsterdam and the Prime Minister to combat the problem of institutional and anti-black racism, and to guarantee the safety of those people who make use of their democratic right to combat racism.”
Heritage and art can create cohesion
The mural titled ‘The wall of Surinamese and black heroes’ was organized for and created by artists Hedy Tjin and Dewi ‘Butterfingas’ Elsinga in the summer of 2020 following the #BlackLivesMatter protests. Surinamese and Black heroes Anton de Kom, Perez Jong Loy, Cindy Kerseborn, Dr. Sophie Redmond, and Hugo Kooks are portrayed in the mural.
