On January 18, 2019, Vereniging Ons Suriname (V.O.S.) celebrated its 100th anniversary. From December 13, 2019 to December 5th 2020 the exhibition "Vereniging Ons Suriname: 100 years of emancipation and struggle" can be seen. It is a compelling story that shows a history of struggle, resistance and emancipation.
Hidden history about Surinamese in the Netherlands
The exhibition shows hidden stories about the Vereniging Ons Suriname and thus: Surinamese in the Netherlands. Based on unique archival documents, videos and photo material, The Black Archives and V.O.S. recount stories about the first association activities of Surinamese in the Netherlands in the beginning of the twentieth century. The exhibition reveals hidden stories about Surinamese resistance during the Second World War and special stories about the emancipation of the Surinamese language and culture.
Did you know that there was a major movement against racism and discrimination in the 1970s? Do you want to know why Surinamese words have become so popular today? Are you curious about images of the international struggle against colonialism and the struggle for the independence of Suriname? Then visit the exhibition!
The artists Raul Balai, Patricia Kaersenhout and Shertise Solano have also made special works of art to make these stories, which have long been hidden, visible again.
