We are (temporarily) moving!
The Black Archives is moving! But we will be back. Early 2024, we are temporarily relocating to the Amsterdamse Poort (Bijlmer) due to the renovation of the building belonging to the ‘Our Suriname Association’.
In the Bijlmer, we aim to build a community archive where we not only share silenced histories and Black culture but also engage with and be in contact with the community. We currently have a large collection focused on the Surinamese community and history, but we want to expand the collection to include stories, books, documents, and other archival materials from Caribbean and African communities.
Below you can see our most recent exposition held at Zeeburgerdijk, Amsterdam. It closed on December 16, 2023:

Exhibition: No Healing Without Repair: 150 years of abolition of slavery
On July 1, 2023, we commemorate 150/160 years since the abolition of slavery. On July 1, 1863, slavery was abolished on paper. However, enslaved individuals in Suriname had to continue working until 1873. The Dutch Parliament decided that plantation owners would receive compensation instead of the victims. The "freed" individuals were left empty-handed.
In "No Healing, Without Repair" we take you on a journey through the hidden histories surrounding the end of slavery. We look at the parliamentary debate on abolition and the heroes who fought for their freedom. We also look to the future. The exhibition features artwork by Edsel Selberie, Farida Sedoc, René Tosari, Serana Angelista & Stikstok.
In 2022, Mark Rutte finally offered apologies on behalf of the Dutch state for its history of slavery. But what do apologies mean if they are not connected to reparations? "We are not writing a full stop, but a comma," said Mark Rutte. What do you think should come after the comma?
